Veeam Data Cloud Vault: What Storage-as-a-Service Tells Us About Veeam's Platform Ambitions
Veeam just announced updates to Veeam Data Cloud Vault at Microsoft Ignite: two new pricing tiers (Foundation and Advanced), flat per-TB pricing, and direct integration with the Veeam Data Platform console. On the surface, it’s a storage product announcement. Underneath, it’s Veeam doubling down on the platform play.
What Vault Actually Is
VDC Vault is Storage-as-a-Service built on Azure Blob Storage. Always immutable, always encrypted, up to 12 nines of durability. You provision it directly from the Veeam Data Platform interface without touching the Azure portal, storage account configuration, or access key management. Click, provision, use.
The pricing is straightforward: flat per-TB with read/write and egress included. No surprises. If you’ve ever been surprised by an Azure egress bill (and who hasn’t), you understand why that matters.
What Caught My Eye
What’s interesting from an infrastructure perspective is that Veeam is abstracting Azure storage behind their own control plane. When a customer provisions a Vault, they’re not getting a raw Azure storage account. They’re getting a Veeam-managed storage resource that happens to run on Azure infrastructure.
That abstraction layer is doing real work: provisioning, access control, immutability policy enforcement, encryption, monitoring, billing metering. Someone at Veeam built a platform that automates all of this per-tenant, at scale, with predictable pricing that absorbs Azure’s variable cost model.
That’s not trivial engineering. It means Veeam has a team running a multi-tenant storage provisioning platform on Azure with automated lifecycle management, cost modeling, and SLA enforcement. The fact that it integrates directly into the VBR console means there’s also an API layer connecting the on-premises data platform to the cloud control plane.
Why I Keep Watching VDC
I’ve said it before. Veeam Data Cloud is the most interesting thing happening at Veeam from a cloud infrastructure perspective. Every VDC announcement reveals another layer of the cloud-native architecture they’re building internally.
VDC started as BaaS for M365. Then BaaS for Azure. Now STaaS with Vault. Each expansion means more tenants, more automation, more infrastructure to manage. The platform team behind VDC is solving the exact problems I’m interested in: multi-tenant provisioning, infrastructure abstraction, cost management at scale, and zero-trust data isolation.
It’s a reminder that even “traditional” enterprise software companies are becoming cloud platform companies, and the engineering skills required to build and run those platforms are increasingly in demand across the industry.

VDC Vault is straightforward for partners to adopt. It’s just another backup target, but one you don’t have to manage. The flat pricing model makes the cost comparison easy, and eliminating storage management overhead frees up time for higher-value work.
